Healthy LivingThe Game of Thrones Themed Catskills Spa

July 20, 2021Craig Oliver

When heading to a hotel for a break, a good spa experience is often one of the many things people are looking for to enhance their stay. The spa is a place to unwind, relax and invigorate in a place that has an ambiance that takes you away from the everyday.

Some spas and hotels attract clients for their luxurious facilities and their location; one fantastic example of that would be the Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain in Ontario, which sits moments away from Georgian Bay. While others use prominent theming to attract clientele alongside their fantastic amenities, one of the finest examples of this can be found within the Shimmer Spa at The Roxbury, which is nestled in the Catskill Mountains.

The spa in New York State utilizes the striking theming of Game of Thrones. The smash-hit HBO show found universal success on TV as an average of over 44.2 million people watched its eight seasons, with all of them now eagerly waiting for the arrival of the spin-off, House of the Dragon. This is coming in 2022, but GoT has permeated popular culture in more ways than just the TV screen. In gaming, you can find a Game of Thrones title amongst the online slots from Gala Spins, which features the Iron Throne imagery front and center. That exposure continues across other platforms, with the iOS title, Game of Thrones: Conquest, which gives fans the chance to experience Westeros wherever they go. This universal popularity means there’s a ready-made clientele waiting to take their fandom to a new level at The Roxbury, where they can experience some of the best facilities that the relaxing hotel and spa have to offer, all while feeling like they’re a part of the show.

The Shimmer Spa is complete with a hot tub, dry sauna, a welcoming fireplace to keep you warm out of the snow, and a black rock shower that massages your feet while you take a shower. There are private treatment rooms, with one big enough for a simultaneous massage fit for the most battle-hardened Kings and Queens. These treatments include a Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, reflexology and skin treatments such as salt glow and aromatherapies are all available for guests to book and enjoy.

Once you’ve enjoyed the best of the treatments on offer at the Shimmer Spa, the ‘Crown of the Pendragons’ is the room for the ultimate ‘Thronie’. Its circular bathtub is in the center of its 20-foot tall bathroom, with a high crown chandelier lighting the faux stonewalls, which perfectly replicate a castle turret. The elevated area around the tub features its two thrones overlooking the tub and offers a place to relax and talk to your bathing king or queen below the 60” TV on the wall. The bathroom sits above an opulent king bedroom complete with chaise lounges and a secret showering chamber fit for any member of the House of Baratheon, Lannister, or Targaryen. It also features a curved open-air balcony with a chained drawbridge roof off the bedroom, offering the perfect place to look over the extensive mountain views, which evokes thoughts of the Red Mountains found in the Dornish Marshes.

Sadly, the stars of Game of Thrones have yet to visit the opulent Shimmer Spa and all the Roxbury has to offer, with their preferred destination being on another continent. However, we’re sure that Daenerys Targaryen and Ygritte would love to rest and relax at the Shimmer Spa to get away from the stresses and strains brought on by the battle of Westeros.
