Deborah Szekely, a trailblazer in the spa and wellness industry and a champion of healthy living, celebrated her 102nd birthday on May 3, 2024.
Beginning her journey as an assistant to Edmond Bordeaux Szekely, Deborah married him in 1939. Together, they opened Rancho la Puerta in 1940 in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. This camp served as a testing ground for their innovative wellness concepts and has since evolved into the renowned Rancho La Puerta.
In 1958, Deborah embarked on a new venture, founding Golden Door, a luxurious spa retreat nestled in the hills north of Escondido, California. Inspired by traditional Japanese ryokans, Golden Door offered a serene escape for travelers seeking rejuvenation. In 2012, the property was acquired by a devoted longtime guest who has upheld Deborah’s legacy and commitment to excellence.
