Sparkling Hill Resort & Spa – From Austria with Love
If Ian Fleming had been looking for a modern-day lair for James Bond, Sparkling Hill Resort & Spa, British Columbia’s newest wellness resort, would have been perfect. Overlooking the reflective brilliance of Lake Okanagan, Sparkling Hill could easily be renamed GoldenEye.During the drive from Vancouver, while meandering along the Okanagan’s scenic highway and country roads, I had mentioned to my companion that I’d heard Sparkling Hill compared to a European-style hotel. But after making the final turn and seeing the resort glistening in the sun, their reaction was, “it looks like nothing I’ve seen in Europe.”Sparkling Hill is a truly unique experience. Occupying a modest location in the north end of British Columbia’s Okanagan wine region, the resort combines brilliant hilltop design and architecture with the understated, yet remarkable, KurSpa experience. After two years of construction at a reported cost of $122 million, Sparkling Hill opened in the spring of 2010. The Austrian influence begins with owner Mr. Gernot Langes-Swarovski, patriarch of the famed Austrian crystal family, and General Manager and CEO Mr. Hans-Peter Mayer, project manager and resort visionary. A recent assessment counted over 3.5 million crystals used in the hotel’s design.Mr. Mayer’s vision of Sparkling Hill is not a resort containing a spa, but a spa within a resort. At over 40,000 square feet, the KurSpa does not disappoint. Delivering a full-sensory spa and wellness experience, KurSpa features seven saunas and steam rooms with different temperatures, and a variety of scents, textures and stimulants designed to promote rejuvenation and relaxation. Their immersive detoxification and cleansing treatments will leave you relaxed and refreshed. I especially enjoyed the Kneipp Waterway pool, a unique creation designed for strolling knee-deep in changing water temperatures. Outside, the infinity pool invites you to take a swim while soaking in the ‘sunsational’ views.
The most unique treatment is Cryotherapy, offered in North America’s first Cold Sauna (-110 Celsius or -166 Fahrenheit). I first inquired about the treatment after exercising, not realizing that participants must be 100% dry. I made an appointment for the next morning, joining a young couple and a middle-aged man in a walker who was using Cryotherapy to treat a medical condition. Dressed in swimsuits, with running shoes, earmuffs, masks and mitts to protect our extremities, we entered the first of three chambers with our winter-suited guide. The KurSpa’s Cold Sauna was an exciting experience, even to a spa connoisseur such as myself. Our guide was excellent, explaining the process and ensuring that we were relaxed and comfortable during the exhilarating two-minute treatment.
Sparkling Hill’s guest rooms are beautiful, clean, well designed and invite you to revel in sunrise or sunset lighting on sweeping mountain or lake views. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a crystal glass fireplace, a bathtub for two, luxurious robes and slippers, and a walk-through rain shower with a view complete the experience. Sliding window walls keep each room ventilated, guaranteeing a great night’s sleep.
Your stay at Sparkling Hill includes valet parking, complimentary Wi-Fi, a full hot breakfast with healthy options and unlimited access to KurSpa. Barrique & Java offers light-meal options and the opportunity to appreciate the views while enjoying BC wines, locally brewed 1516 lager or a shaken, not stirred, Vodka Martini. For dinner, PeakFine serves a tantalizing menu showcasing the best products of the Okanagan Valley. And of course, the staff were friendly and helpful, offering a genuine charm that is characteristic of the Okanagan.
James Bond would be very impressed.
