September 2, 2015Craig Oliver

On a recent trip to one of our favorite towns in Southern California, Spas of America enjoyed the company of Cathy Cluff, President of The Oaks at Ojai.

Who are you?
I’m Cathy Cluff President and CEO of
The Oaks at Ojai. I operate a family founded destination Spa in Ojai Ca. that started in 1977.

First job in the industry?
At age 11 I stuffed brochures and cleaned the pool area of The Oaks. Since my mother was teaching almost every class her self to stretch the budget she employed without pay her kids to help as well.

Why do you love your job?
I love my job because it changes everyday. It is challenging and rewarding all in a days work. To know that what you are doing even behind the scenes has helped to improve a persons life is one of the greatest joys of my job. I also love that my employees love working at The Oaks they stay for a long time some since we opened in 1977 are still working here others leave to try something new and come back.

What is the best thing about where you live?
I love Everything about Ojai. It is a magical bucolic valley. It is a small town filled with big thinkers who care about their community. It is not where I have to live it is where I truly want to live. We are a unique town without a Starbucks and we like it that way.

How do you integrate wellness into your life?
By being mindful and positive. I have learned to let go on many levels and surround myself with positive people and actions. I try to eat well and enjoy nature but I know I could exercise more. I believe wellness is as much emotional as it is physical.

What’s the best advice you’ve given or received?
I was told to hire the attitude and teach the skill when possible. In the spa industry this works very well.

Where was your favorite spa experience?
Baden Baden Germany it was my first real spa experience. I was a college student backpacking Europe for 3 months and I loved the baths of varying temperatures and the German brush massage was quite an experience.

What spa in the world would you like to visit?
The Spa at Regent Palms Turks & Caicos

What is next for The Oaks at Ojai?
The Oaks is going back to its roots and will be putting a stronger emphasis on weight loss and healthy habits. We strive to stay affordable and attainable for most. We will be adding a few new services and are always making improvements to our beautiful Spanish Mediterranean building that was originally built in 1908.

Why is taking time for Spa and Wellness important?
Because it create balance in our lives and with balance we have better coping abilities for stress and anything else. An investment in ones health has the greatest returns in the way of happiness and longevity.
