Five Ways to Avoid Holiday Inches

Five Ways to Avoid Holiday Inches
They call it the Holiday Season - I call it the Season of Temptation! Nearly thirty days full of calorie-rich, guilt-inducing goodies just waiting to be consumed before the New Year rolls around with all its resolutions and good intentions. For 11 months, we all seem to do a pretty good job of leading healthy lifestyle, but come Thanksgiving, it all goes out the window - starting with that load of mashed potatoes and giblet gravy around 3 o' clock Thanksgiving afternoon. What to do?

Total deprivation is definitely not an option, so why not try these easy great tips:

  • Keep up with your regular meals - starting with breakfast. The idea of saving those calories for "later" just sets you up for going overboard once you get near the dessert table. Besides, saying 'No" is a whole lot easier when you don't feel hungry in the first place. Try having a healthy snack before going out to that fabulous, food-filled cocktail party!

  • This one's a no-brainer. Eat everything you want, just cut your portions in half. If it's a buffet, take a little more salad and veggies to fill up your plate or if trays are being passed, you can easily decline the second (and third) time they come around. And eat mindfully, savouring every last morsel, instead of gobbling it down.

  • Avoid standing anywhere near the food table. The further away you are, the less likely it is that you'll be tempted to nibble as you chat and mingle.

  • Keep up your exercise routine no matter the weather. If you don't have a dog that needs walking, pretend that you do! Even if it's only 15 minutes of brisk exercise. And look at ways to involve the family or your best friend in your "active"ities and make it more fun.

  • Have you ever noticed how you feel hungrier when you haven't slept well?  Those zzz's are important, so try to get as much restful sleep as possible.

Have a healthy Holiday Season and may you enjoy each and every calorie-filled moment!
