U.S. Spa Industry Facts
With the passing of each day, the nation's spa and wellness industry continues to develop and mature. People are discovering, what others have known for generations, that spa and wellness has the ability to contribute positively to people's lives, their health and their overall well-being.
The following industry statistics are supplied by ISPA - The International Spa Association.
The U.S. Spa Industry - Fast Facts
Spa Locations
- In 2009, there were 20,600 spas in the U.S., a slight decline of 3.2 percent compared to the previous year.
- In 2008, there were 21,300 spas.
- In 2007, there were 17,900 spas.
- Over a decade, the number of spa locations has grown from 5,700 in 1999 to 20,600 in 2009.
Spa Visits
- In 2009, there were 143 million spa visits in the U.S., a decline of 10.2 percent compared to the previous year.
- In 2008, there were 160 million spa visits.
- In 2007, there were 138 million spa visits.
- Over a decade, the number of spa visits has grown from 90.7 million in 1999 to 143 million in 2009.
Revenue
- In 2009, $12.3 billion of revenue was generated by the U.S. spa industry, a slight decline of 4.3 percent.
- In 2008, $12.8 billion of revenue was generated by the U.S. spa industry.
- In 2007, $10.9 billion of revenue was generated by the U.S. spa industry.
- Over a decade, the amount of spa revenue has grown from $5 billion in 1999 to $12.3 billion in 2009.
Employment
2010
- In May 2010, there were 332,000 total employees. The total was comprised of 138,100 full-time employees, 137,200 part-time employees and 56,800 contract employees.
2009
- In March 2009, there were 340,000 total employees. The total was comprised of 158,200 full-time employees, 112,300 part-time employees and 70,100 contract employees.
2008
- In June 2008, there were 303,700 total employees. The total was comprised of 143,200 full-time employees, 112,000 part-time employees and 48,500 contract employees.
2007
- In July 2007, there were 232,700 total employees. The total was comprised of 117,100 full-time employees, 73,100 part-time employees and 42,500 contract employees.
1999
- Over a decade, the number of spa industry employees has grown from 151,000 in 1999 to 332,000 in May 2010.
