Cayman Luxe: Silver Rain Spa, Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman
Celebrating its fifth year in the Caribbean, the Silver Rain spa by La Prairie at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, is a shimmering beauty. A soundproof silver door leads to the stunning waterfall entry. The design, by award-winning architectural firm D’Aquino Monaco, is modern yet elemental.

The “water walls” and quartz-like stone floor (that is up-lit) form a bridge from the resort to the spa. Water is everywhere evident in the design—from the silvery walls (reminiscent of capiz shells) to the chandeliers that look like glistening melting ice.

A refreshing respite from the sun

The cool color palette is visually refreshing and a respite from the intense Caribbean sun. The 20,000-square-foot spa feels spacious but not overwhelming. Spa guides lead you from the changing area to the lounge upstairs, where a concierge offers beverages and a variety of snacks. The silver chaise lounge chairs create privacy; though the waiting area was hosting several groups, I appreciated the chance to reflect in quiet.

Another detail and a nice touch: you are presented with music options and preselect what you would like during your treatment. Whether you want classical or jazz to help you relax—the choice is yours.

Facial to replenish skin’s moisture

I tried the Silver Rain Facial—a 90-minute service that starts with a footbath. Featuring the signature Silver Rain fragrances of bergamot, jasmine and sandalwood, and a dual mask treatment (customized after a skin analysis), this is both a luxurious and beneficial treatment.

After being on the beach for days (even using SPF 50), I found my skin was dehydrated and feeling the effects of too much sun. I left with dewy skin, resolved to continue using the products that had an immediate effect on my skin.

I am happy to report that there will soon be another La Prairie Spa opening, on the west coast of the United States—at LA’s Hotel Bel-Air, in the fall of 2011. The entire hotel is being refurbished—new villas and the new 12,000-square-foot spa.

World-class amenities, eco-adventure programs

The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman is a huge complex, which spans both the ocean and bay sides of the island. Guests from the main hotel walk through the Gallery (featuring beautiful works of art from local artisans) to reach the ocean side and the famous seven-mile beach. The hotel offers 365 rooms and suites, including 24 residences.

You’ll see famous names on the golf course (Greg Norman) and in the restaurants—seafood chef Eric Ripert’s Blue. The Ambassadors of the Environment program—by yet another familiar name, Jean-Michel Cousteau—is an eco-adventure program and an important part of the resort’s commitment to nature.

It is part of the impressive programming that caters to guests and their families: small children, youth and adults, there is something for everyone. Four principles abide in all programming: “everything is connected; there is no waste in nature; everything runs on energy; and biodiversity is good.”
