A Healthy Taste of Texas ~ Lake Austin Spa Resort

A Healthy Taste of Texas ~ Lake Austin Spa Resort
There’s something almost transformative about being surrounded by a vast body of still, peaceful water, ringed by breezy trees and nature in its purest form. Such a setting soothes the soul and warms the spirit—at least that’s how I felt as I arrived for my week-long stay at Lake Austin Spa Resort, a renowned destination spa in the Hill Country of Texas, just half an hour from downtown Austin.

The resort itself is as charming and warm as they come; it has been a constant favorite of spa-goers. It’s not large, but rather boutique and thus highly personalized. The staff welcomed me with genuine care and TLC, and I instantly understood why Lake Austin is often called a “home away from home.”

Each room is plush, handsome and cozy, with your own private outdoor area to overlook the lake, on which you’ll probably see someone gliding along in a kayak or a water bicycle. Yes, I tried both, which were “firsts” and more enriching than I ever would have imagined.

Outstanding meals and spa services

Lucky for me it was Culinary Week, so I learned techniques and wonderful recipes sure to impress my friends back home, all the while bonding with women who were as eager as me to be more healthy and conscious. The resort meals themselves are mouth-watering. Flavorful and savory lamb, fish, beef and chicken dishes are served daily. Decadent but low-calorie desserts include key lime and coconut banana cream pies, and even chocolate cakes and daily frozen yogurt. Dream come true!

The LakeHouse spa itself is gorgeous and offers every service imaginable. At dinner, all of the women would chat and compare notes about their therapists, raving how theirs was more fabulous than the next. The signature massage and facial services were definite favorites.

A tip: make some time for relaxing in or by the water—whether in the hammock overlooking the lake, in the Jacuzzi or in any of the three beautiful pools, open late into the evening.

Lessons in fitness and wellness

Various classes (available to all guests) are taught by instructors who are passionate, personable and knowledgeable. I learned better posture techniques (needed after so much computer time!) and ways to keep my mind sharp and focused. I also learned relaxation and stress reduction tools, plus new ways to be fit and flexible (classes with the Bosu ball, foam roller, balance, cardio and more). Who knew how easy it is to work some of these exercises into your routine back home?

Wonderful yoga classes offer gentle guidance and encouragement to stay present. Some one-on-one classes may be included in your package, giving you the chance to really hone some skills to call upon once back home.

I noticed from all of the guests a real determination to return soon—and also I sensed a renewed and shared commitment to remember to value and honor one’s own well-being. What better way to strengthen one’s own inner spirit and empowerment?
