  • Saint John's wort

    Medicinal herb in tablet, tea or ointment form said to provide some relief for mild depression. This herb can be counter-indicated, or reactive to other anti-depressant drugs, allergies and sensitive systems.

  • salsa dancing

    Vibrant dance style fuses African, Cuban, Latin American and swing rhythms. Salsa is traditionally danced in pairs who occupy a fixed area on the dance floor.

  • salt glow

    Invigorating body exfoliation in which salt and essential oils polish the skin to rejuvenate and stimulate circulation.

  • sand painting

    This Buddhist tradition uses colored sand on a wooden platform to create a meticulous design, which is brushed clear after a short period of time. This illustrates the brief intricacy of life and existence.

  • sauna

    Cleansing process involving periods of perspiring in heat and steam created with water on heated stones. Combined with refreshing showers, saunas enhance the immune system and relieve stress.

  • Scotch hose

    During this therapy, alternated hot, cold, fresh or salt water relieves sore muscles and stimulates circulation with a high- pressure hose.

  • seaweed wrap

    A seawater and seaweed wrap, rich with nutrient minerals, vitamins and proteins. This therapy is said to detoxify, increase circulation, and reduce signs of cellulite.

  • sensory-deprivation flotation capsule

    An enclosed tank filled with warm water and Epsom salts creates a peaceful, dark environment, similar to that of the womb, providing a sense of abundant relaxation.

  • Shiatsu

    A form of therapeutic massage in which pressure is applied with the thumbs and palms to those areas of the body used in acupuncture. Also called acupressure.

  • Shirodhara

    Healing Ayurvedic treatment. Oil is poured in a steady stream on the forehead for 30 to 45 minutes with a scalp massage. Improves sensory function, relieves insomnia, stress, anxiety, and depression leaving energy and well being to prevail.

  • silent hikes

    A leisurely nature-walk with focus on creating little sound in order to connect with the natural surroundings.

  • spa

    According to ISPA, (An establishment) "that is devoted to enhancing overall well-being through a variety of professional services that encourage the renewal of body, mind and spirit".

  • spinning

    A stationary bike workout that allows riders to adjust resistance for competence level. Students are guided through a virtual hill course, cued to adjust resistance.

  • steam room

    Room where temperatures are kept between 110 to 130 F and humidity is generated in order to soften skin, clean pores, and relieve tension.

  • step aerobics

    Low impact lower body toning and aerobic activity performed by stepping on and off a platform that ranges from four to ten inches.

  • stress management

    An integrated approach to reducing stress via exercise, relaxation and visualization techniques.

  • stretching

    The activity of gradually applying force to lengthen, strengthen, and lubricate muscles, often performed before physical exertion and to increase the range of motion within a joint. Helps prevent injury to tendons, ligaments and muscles by improving elasticity and tone.

  • sugaring

    Ancient depilatory process in which a sugar-containing sticky paste is applied to the skin, then quickly removed with a cloth or paper strip leaving skin hairless.

  • Swedish massage

    In this therapeutic classical European technique, muscles are massaged with oil to relax, relieve pain and to improve circulation and mobility.

  • Sweat Lodge

    A ceremonial spiritual purification sauna used by North American First Nations or Native American peoples in domed or oblong huts similar to a teepee. Stones are heated in an exterior fire and then placed in a hole in the middle of the floor.

  • Swiss shower

    Powerful shower jets are directed at the body from various heights resulting in an invigorating massage.
